A URL shortener turns a long web address into a short one, such as zngl.ink/spring, that redirects to the original page. Short links are easier to read aloud, fit in an SMS or a social bio, and look cleaner in print. For a business, the real value comes after you share the link: you can see how many people clicked, where they came from, and change the destination without changing the link.
How short links work
When someone opens a short link, the shortener looks up the short code and sends the browser an HTTP redirect to the destination. The visitor lands on your page a fraction of a second later. Along the way the shortener records the click: time, rough location, device, and the referring site or app.
What businesses use them for
- Social media bios and posts, where long links are ugly or not clickable.
- SMS and WhatsApp campaigns, where every character counts and trust matters.
- Print, packaging and QR codes, where a link must be short enough to type or encode.
- Podcasts, video and radio, where the link has to be spoken.
- Campaign measurement, with a separate link per channel or placement.
Branded vs. generic short links
A generic short link uses the shortener's domain. A branded short link uses a short domain you own, such as go.yourbrand.com or a short domain registered for the purpose. Branded links:
- Show recipients the link is yours, which raises clicks and trust.
- Are less likely to be filtered, because they aren't shared with millions of unrelated senders.
- Keep working if you switch shortener provider, because you own the domain.
Tracking clicks properly
A shortener counts clicks on the link itself. To see what those visitors did on your site, add UTM parameters to the destination URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign) so your analytics attributes visits and sales to the right campaign. Create one short link per placement you want to compare: the Instagram bio, the newsletter and the flyer should each have their own.
Expect some difference between shortener clicks and analytics sessions. Link previews, security scanners in email systems and people who leave before the page loads all count as clicks but not visits. A good shortener filters obvious bots out of its reports.
Short links and SEO
- Search engines follow redirects. A permanent (301) redirect passes signals to the destination; many shorteners use temporary (302) redirects so the destination can be changed and each click recorded.
- Short links are for sharing, not for your site's own internal links. Link to your pages directly on your website.
- Avoid chains of redirects (a short link to another short link to your page). Each hop slows the visit down.
Link safety and trust
Because short links hide the destination, they are also used in phishing. Help recipients trust yours:
- Use a branded domain that clearly belongs to you.
- Use readable back-halves (
/summer-salerather than/x7Tq2) for links in campaigns. - Choose a provider that screens destinations for malware and phishing.
Rules that apply in SMS and email
- United States: mobile carriers filter business texts, and shared public shortener domains are a common reason messages get blocked. A branded domain registered to your business is the safer choice for SMS.
- Canada, UK, EU and Australia: the link doesn't change the consent rules for the message it's in, but if you track clicks per person, your privacy notice should say so.
How to choose a URL shortener
- Permanence: check what happens to your links if you downgrade or cancel. A link printed on packaging should work for years.
- Custom domains on a plan you can afford.
- Destination editing, so a mistake or a moved page doesn't mean a reprint.
- Analytics: clicks over time, referrers, devices and countries, with bot filtering, kept long enough to compare campaigns.
- QR codes for the same link, so print and digital share one set of stats.
- An API if you create links in bulk or from other systems.
