Email marketing is sending messages to people who have asked to hear from you, so they come back and buy again. Unlike social reach or ads, your email list is an audience you own: no algorithm decides whether your customers see you. For a small business it is usually the highest-return marketing channel, and the one most often done badly.
Build a list worth sending to
The size of your list matters far less than whether the people on it want your email. The best subscribers come from:
- Checkout: a clear, unticked opt-in box for marketing email at the point of purchase.
- A useful offer: a first-order discount, a guide, early access or a sample in exchange for an email address.
- Your site's busiest pages: a simple sign-up form on product and blog pages, not only the footer.
- In person: at the till, at events, or on a card in every parcel.
Never buy or rent lists. Purchased addresses damage your sender reputation, often breach consent law, and rarely buy anything.
The campaigns that earn their keep
Automated emails (set up once)
- Welcome series: two or three emails that introduce your brand and deliver the promised offer. These routinely get your best open rates.
- Abandoned cart: a reminder within a few hours, and perhaps a second a day later. Among the highest-converting emails there are.
- Post-purchase: order confirmation, shipping updates, how-to-use tips, then a review request once the product has arrived.
- Win-back: a message to customers who haven't bought in a while, before they forget you entirely.
Campaigns (sent when you have news)
- New products and restocks.
- Seasonal sales and events.
- A regular newsletter with genuinely useful content, not just offers.
Automations do most of the revenue work for small businesses, because they reach each person at the moment they are most likely to act.
Segment instead of blasting
Sending the same email to everyone is the fastest way to raise unsubscribes. Simple segments go a long way:
- Customers vs. subscribers who haven't bought yet.
- What they bought, or which category they browse.
- How recently and how often they buy.
- Where they are, for time zones, currency and local events.
Write emails people open and read
- Subject line: specific beats clever. Say what's inside. Keep it short enough to read on a phone.
- Preview text: the line after the subject in the inbox. Use it to add a reason to open.
- One main goal per email, with one clear button.
- Design for mobile first: most email is read on a phone. Single column, large text, tappable buttons.
- Personalise with care: a first name is nice; if the field is empty, the greeting should fall back cleanly rather than show a blank or a raw placeholder.
Deliverability: getting into the inbox
A great email in the spam folder earns nothing. Since 2024, Gmail and Yahoo have required bulk senders (those sending roughly 5,000 or more messages a day to their users) to meet specific standards, and the same practices help every sender:
- Authenticate your domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and send from your own domain, not a free webmail address.
- Offer one-click unsubscribe in marketing email and process it promptly.
- Keep spam complaints very low. Google asks bulk senders to stay below 0.3% and ideally much lower.
- Clean your list: remove hard bounces immediately and stop mailing people who haven't opened in many months.
- Warm up new domains and IPs by starting with your most engaged subscribers and increasing volume gradually.
The law, region by region
- United States (CAN-SPAM Act): no deceptive subject lines or headers, identify the message as an ad where applicable, include a valid physical postal address, and honour unsubscribe requests within 10 business days. Consent isn't required before the first email, but it is best practice and what inbox providers reward.
- Canada (CASL): stricter. You need express or implied consent before sending a commercial email, must identify yourself, and must include an unsubscribe mechanism that is honoured within 10 business days. Implied consent from a purchase expires after two years.
- United Kingdom (PECR and UK GDPR): marketing email to individuals needs consent, with a "soft opt-in" exception for existing customers who bought similar products and were given a chance to opt out. Every email must offer a way to opt out.
- European Union (GDPR and the ePrivacy rules): consent must be freely given, specific and recorded; pre-ticked boxes don't count. Member states implement the ePrivacy rules slightly differently, so check the country you send to.
- Australia (Spam Act 2003): you need consent (express or inferred), must clearly identify your business, and must include a functional unsubscribe that is actioned within five business days.
The practical common ground: record consent with a date and source for each contact, make unsubscribing effortless, and suppress anyone who opts out across every campaign.
Measure what matters
- Click rate and revenue per email are more reliable than open rate, which privacy features in mail apps now inflate.
- Unsubscribe and complaint rates tell you when you are sending too often or to the wrong people.
- List growth net of unsubscribes and bounces.
- Replies: an email that starts conversations is doing its job.
Choosing an email marketing tool
Look for a visual template editor, automations (welcome, abandoned cart, win-back), segmentation on purchase data, domain authentication help, and clear per-contact or per-send pricing. If you also sell online or talk to customers on WhatsApp, a tool that shares one customer record with your store and your inbox saves a lot of syncing.
ZingaConnect sends email through your own SMTP or Amazon SES account, or through managed sending on paid plans where we set up your domain authentication. Templates with merge fields, drip campaigns, scheduled broadcasts with send windows, static and dynamic lists, and open, click, bounce and reply tracking are all included, and the contact record is shared with ZingaShop orders. Plans are priced by contacts, starting free for up to 250.
